Animal Week: Day 3=Fish

We did very little for fish day, but the stuff we did do was pretty fun. Like always, we started out with a creative story about sharks, somehow a bunny got thrown into the mix and saved the day! I'm glad I am keeping these stories for Charlotte, she is going to get a kick out of the crazy stuff she tells me! We didn't get any fish books from the library but we did read a few that we already own. I've come to the realization that we don't have many books about fish, what gives!?

We did some counting with goldfish crackers.

The best part was eating them of course!

Charlotte colored some fish (3 different colors) with the intentions of doing some sorting and patterns. All she got done was the coloring part.

Char glued muffin tin liners onto some construction paper to resemble scales like fish have. The regular white glue wasn't holding the metal liners on so I ended up switching to hot glue. After the whole piece of paper was covered, we had to set it aside in order to let the white glue we did use dry completely so we could cut out the shape of a fish.

After dinner we were able to finish up our light bulb bird project from yesterday. Decoupaged tissue paper, feathers, google eyes and polymer clay beaks.

Char's is the green one and mine is the blue one. They ended up falling from this spot onto the kitchen floor, but since there is so much tissue paper decoupaged onto the light bulbs they didn't break, yay!

Tomorrow is reptiles and amphibians!

Our First Random Route

4 miles in a little less than 2 hours. For some odd reason Travis walked with a backpack filled with 50 pounds worth of weights and I was pushing the stroller which is pretty much the same thing. Strangely enough my legs aren't the least bit sore. I did drink quite a bit of water throughout the day which I think helped in that aspect. The weather is getting nicer so the walks should be getting longer!

Animal Week: Day 2=Birds

Bird Day, wooo! Today went a lot better than yesterday that's for sure! We started off with breakfast and creative writing about birds. Did a few chores and got down to business!

Charlotte sorting feathers by color. Working with feathers sucks, little pieces get everywhere and you can't sweep them up because the air created by the broom just blows them in all sorts of directions. I've worked with the feathers once before and vowed never to do it again but for the sake of learning I broke my vow, now I am vowing again never to use feathers!

Charlotte putting feathers on her arms in hopes that she will be able to fly too

She picked out one feather in every color and measured their length.

I wrote down their lengths and she wanted to try too.

I traced out Charlotte's arms and we measured her "wingspan"

Charlotte and Alexis coloring Charlotte's wings. Char wanted her handprint and footprint and my handprint up there as well (so it turned into the adult "Charlottebird" handprint)

When we got weary of all things bird we went and played with circles! A nice lunch of quesadillas (with circle shaped tortillas) and a few books about birds for naptime. These were the favorite picture books about birds we got from the library:

We also checked out some nonfiction bird books including a few about the life cycles of different birds and how they form inside eggs and hatch, very cool pictures.

After naptime we went outside on a bird/feather hunt. Charlotte decided she wanted to fly like a bird on the trampoline.

By the end of the day we had a wardrobe malfunction, so a fresh change of clothes and we started a bird craft. I found a way to turn old light bulbs into birds on Crafts by Amanda so that is what we started, it will have to be finished another day so we can wait for the mod podge to dry completely.

Tomorrow is Fish Day!

Animal Week: Day 1=Mammal Day

So we started Char's first day of school today! Just like all the big kids :) We started the day by looking out the window and watching the middle & high school kids at the bus stop. Char likes having the window open so she can yell, "Hi kids!" I'm sure they probably can't hear her and even if they did they can't see her because her head barely peeks over the window. I spent the weekend planning each day for this week, A is for Animals! It didn't go exactly as planned but the awesome thing about doing it yourself is there is always tomorrow to finish what didn't happen today! So here's a breakdown of what we did today:

Char picked out her own breakfast, oatmeal with grape jelly (blech!) After breakfast and getting dressed we wrote a story. I have been writing starting paragraphs or topic sentences to try to get Charlotte to tell creative stories and I write down what she has to say. Eventually, I'm hoping it turns into her doing her own creative writing.

The first thing on our agenda was to run some errands, first stop on the list the library. We picked out books about mammals and books about birds for bird day tomorrow. We got picture books from the children's section and some nonfiction books from the juvenile section with real animal pictures. These were our favorite picture books:

Our next stop was Dance Outfitters to get Charlotte a leotard, skirt and some tights so she can start ballet/tap class on Saturday. We hopped on over next door to the Dollar Tree after that to look for some hula hoops for Lexi's party and also found some cool dinosaur and vehicle foam stickers. After that we headed to Michael's to buy some fondant and premixed icing for Lexi's cake (that's right, I'm not making my own!). Since that was right around 11:45 I figured we'd head home for some lunch and a nap and then we'd wake up all fresh and wide-eyed ready to learn (and when I say, "we" I really mean, the girls). Both girls fell asleep on the way home. When something lucky like that happens you have to take full advantage, so I put all the shopping in the house along with my purse and my keys and headed back out to get Charlotte. Somehow the door shut and locked behind me and we were locked out. I think it was our ghost, I call him Johnathan. Anywho, to make a long story short I walked a long way to the library to use the phone to call Travis to ask him if we had a spare key, we do, walked a long way back to the house and by then both girls were awake. So continue on with Plan B.

We mostly did reading about mammals, didn't do many crafty things or worksheets. A lot of animals that are mammals never really crossed my mind that they are actually mammals, specifically: bats, armadillos, platypi (?), porcupines. Not that I didn't know they were mammals, I just never really thought about it.

Charlotte drew a picture of one her favorite mammals, the dog.

Our motto for the day was, "Mammals make milk!" Char was running around the house chanting it. So I figured, mammals make milk, milk makes ice cream...hmmm...we must investigate! Time for ice cream!
That was pretty much it for the day, considering the events that took place we got more (yet somehow less) done than I thought we would! Now for day 2, birds!

The Comeback

The Cosby Sweater

The Victoria's Secret catalog never fails to amuse me. Maybe I'm just paying too much attention to the pictures or something. I guess I'm supposed to just flip through the book, decide what I want and charge up the plastic. I don't wear Victoria's Secret, they aren't even my catalogs, they are my Mom's, she happens to get her mail sent to my house. Thanks Mom! I like to flip through the catalog and try to figure out what is photoshopped or not. This picture caught my eye:
At first I thought this HAS to be photoshopped! Look at the leg on the right, how is it positioned like that!? The model is facing forward but one of her knees is facing directly to the left, quite frankly I'm kinda grossed out by this positioning. There is no way that is possible to bend your leg like that.
I happened to be wrong though. I just tried it while the photo was uploading. It IS possible yet looks pretty gruesome and is ridiculously uncomfortable. I hope they paid her the big bucks to contort her leg that way!

Oh, and an update about the model from this post, she obviously made it through the photo shoot, she was in this month's catalog looking alive and somewhat well. There's still something wrong with her lips though...
